Aparigraha - what do we really need?

In ‘Light on Yoga’, Iyengar writes:
‘Of the eight limbs of yoga, the first limb isyama, the ethical disciplines.
These transcend creed, country, age and time. The areahimsa(non-violence),satya(truth),asteya(non-stealing),bramacharya(continence) andaparigraha(non-covetousness). These commandments are the rules of morality for society, which if not obeyed bring about chaos as a result of the evils of greed, desire and attachment. [...] By the observance ofaparigraha, the yogi makes his life as simple as possible and trains his mind not to feel the loss or the lack of anything.

Ahimsa (A post for Remembrance Day)

Of the eight limbs of yoga, the first limb is ‘yama’, the ethical disciplines. The yamas are ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence), ‘satya’ (truth), ‘asteya’ (non-stealing), ‘bramacharya’ (continence) and ‘aparigraha’ (non-covetousness). They arenon-denominationalrules of morality for society, and apply not only to our behaviours off the yoga mat, but also to our practice on the mat.

On the mat, ahimsa, non-violence, can be held in our hearts as we allow our practice to be as it is today, irrespective of how it compares to that of our neighbour, or to our practice as it was yesterday, or at some other time, or how our ego would like it to be.
